The match-book of dogs, kept honestly

Jack Russell Terrier

The ratings of a much larger dog packed into a small one: very high energy, vocal, poor alone, and a garden required.

Small dog, outsized engine. The Jack Russell is a fearless little fox-hunting terrier with seemingly limitless energy, and its ratings are best read with that first line firmly in mind.

The temperament sheet

Energy is rated very high — remarkable in a small breed, and the single most important number on this page. Time alone is rated poor; a bored, solitary terrier finds its own employment, and you will not approve of its choices.

With children the rating is needs-supervision: interactions should be overseen rather than assumed. For a first dog the answer is no. And despite its size, space is rated needs-garden — the exercise requirement, not the dog, sets the space requirement.

The practical side

  • Size: small. The only small thing about it.
  • Grooming: low. An undemanding coat.
  • Shedding: moderate.
  • Barking: vocal. Expect running commentary.

Sheet, then dog

Ratings are averages, and terriers are individuals to a fault. The particular dog outranks its breed sheet, and meeting that dog outranks everything this page can tell you.
